Deskrawl Steam Deck: The Player Setup That Actually Works

The developer has made zero Steam Deck statements. A 40-vote player review documents a working Proton 10 plus Mouse Only setup, and the known limits.

Deskrawl Steam Deck: Official Says Nothing, Players Found a Fix

There is no official Steam Deck statement for Deskrawl: Idle ARPG — not a Deck Verified badge, not a Steam Input tag, not one word about handhelds in any of the developer's 26 Steam announcements. What does exist is player evidence: Steam's own review system flags reviews written on a Steam Deck, and the most-upvoted one (40 people found it helpful) hands you a reproducible recipe — force Proton 10.0-4, then apply the Mouse Only layout template. We have not run this on a Deck ourselves; everything below is read off Steam's API or quoted from a named source with a vote count attached.

  • Official position: unstated. No Steam Deck tag, platforms.linux = false, zero mentions across 26 announcements.
  • Working recipe (community-reported): Proton 10.0-4 forced via Properties > Compatibility, plus the Mouse Only Steam Input layout.
  • Confirmed gap: online mode, which the developer has never answered.

Nothing here is verified by us or by Valve, and there is no Deck Verified rating to fall back on. If the forced-Proton route breaks on a future SteamOS update, you will not get an official word about it. The release date, price and system requirements page is the cheaper thing to check first.

Three of those tags do matter for a handheld, and they are Valve-approved developer declarations rather than guesses: Mouse Only Option (id 76), Playable without Timed Input (id 74) and Adjustable Difficulty (id 78). The game was designed to be operated with a pointer and without reaction-time pressure. None of them says anything about Linux, Proton or Deck hardware — the missing Deck rating is not evidence of non-support, only that nobody at First Day Games pressed the button.

The player setup that works: Proton 10 plus the Mouse Only layout

The recipe comes from a Steam review whose hardware block reads Steam Deck / SteamOS Holo / AMD Custom APU 0405 - RAM: 14 GB, posted 2026-09-28, last edited 2026-09-29. 40 people found it helpful, 2 found it funny.

Step Path What to pick
1 Library > Deskrawl > Properties > Compatibility > Enable Force Proton 10.0-4
2 Library > Deskrawl > Controller Symbol > Current Button Layout the Mouse Only template (4th in the Templates list), then Apply Layout

The same Proton line appears as an answer in the Steam thread No online conection on steam deck, posted by the same player on 2026-09-28, two months after the original complaint.

What makes this more than a forum anecdote is that Steam flagged the review itself. The rendered page carries a Steam Deck badge whose tooltip reads: This reviewer played this game primarily on Steam Deck at the time of writing (30.2 hours). Valve's own detection, not the reviewer's description.

Do the layout step before you judge the game

Step 2 is the one people skip. Without a Mouse Only layout the Deck's default controls do not match how this game takes input, and people conclude the game is unplayable.

How many Deck players are actually posting reviews

Steam's public review API exposes a per-review primarily_steam_deck boolean. Pulling the full corpus gives a hard number that no competitor guide quotes: of 778 unique reviews, 3 are flagged as primarily Steam Deck, and all three are positive.

Date Language Vote signal What it says
2026-09-28 English 40 helpful, 2 funny Runs well on Steam Deck with Proton 10 and Mouse Only layout; full steps quoted above
2026-09-28 German 2 helpful Praises it as a desktop idler you can leave running while doing something else
2026-09-30 English 0 helpful Runs it on the Deck at work, uses a phone hotspot, says it does work with Proton 10

Two caveats. The badge only appears when Steam can identify the hardware, so 3 is a floor, not a census; and three is a very small sample. Read it as "it demonstrably runs", not "it runs well for everyone". Wider text search on the same corpus: proton appears in 4 reviews (all positive, though one opens with "Struggling to get it to work with Proton"), linux in exactly 1 (a negative, covered next), and one Spanish review claims "compatibilidad excelente en Steam Deck forzando Proton 10".

What breaks: native Linux, and the online mode question

These are two failures, constantly conflated. A Deck running Proton is a Windows build under Wine; a Linux desktop running the native build is not, and that is where the hard failure lives.

Native Linux: one black-screen report. A negative review dated 2026-09-29 with 7 helpful votes: "Does not work on Linux, black screen instead of a transparent window, unable to interact with any UI elements, you must force kill the process to regain control of my PC." It adds that developers said on Discord they do not support Linux and have no plans to — community-reported, since Discord is not publicly auditable.

The failure is mechanically plausible rather than mysterious. The signature feature — a transparent, always-on-top strip along the bottom of your desktop — lives in the TransparentWindow class, which declares P/Invokes straight into Win32 and DWM: GetActiveWindow, SetWindowLong, SetWindowPos, MonitorFromWindow, GetMonitorInfo, GetCursorPos, GetWindowRect, and DwmExtendFrameIntoClientArea. That last one is the Windows Desktop Window Manager and has no native Linux counterpart. Wine reimplements these calls; a native Linux player gets no such shim. That is inference from the build, not a developer statement — but it explains why the report says black screen instead of a transparent window, and why the UI is dead rather than merely ugly.

Online mode: genuinely unresolved, and the reports conflict. The 2026-09-30 review says it runs on their Deck over a phone hotspot; the thread says it gets no connection at all. The thread No online conection on steam deck has three comments and no developer reply:

Posted Who Content
2026-06-30 thread starter "it does not get a connection while on a steam deck"
2026-07-05 a second player "same, I can't start a online character with steam deck"
2026-09-28 Sea Level Cain "does the progress sink when you play on your pc?"
2026-09-28 EVO the Proton 10.0-4 answer quoted above

It sat unanswered for two months and was resolved — if at all — by another player, on launch day. Nobody answered the cross-device save question either; see the Online Mode guide.

Deck-relevant settings the build ships with

Compile-time constants survive the decompilation intact (method bodies do not, so nothing here depends on a stripped function). Source: the game's SettingsManager class, 1.0 launch build of 2026-09-28; live has since moved to patch 1.0.0g. The window also reads the monitor work area via GetMonitorInfo, so the strip sizes itself to whichever display it lands on.

Constant Value Why it matters on a handheld
DefaultFrameRate 60 The frame-rate target defaults to 60, not uncapped — the cheapest battery decision is already the default
MinUIScale / MaxUIScale 0.5 / 1.5 Worth shrinking on a 1280x800 panel
MinHUDScale / MaxHUDScale 0.5 / 1.5 HUD scales independently of the panels
AlwaysOnTop persisted setting key Always-on-top is a toggle, not a fixed mode
GameWidth, WindowX, WindowY persisted setting keys A stripped-down Deck layout persists across restarts

What it costs you in the background is covered in Deskrawl memory usage and FPS.

Is it worth buying before you commit hardware time

The price makes this a cheap experiment, not a risky one: $6.99 list, $4.89 during the launch discount, full picture in Is Deskrawl worth it?. Steam Cloud is one of the twelve official tags, so a save should follow you between machines, though the backup mechanics have their own rough edges covered here. Read the online-mode situation first, then try forced Proton before any long session; newcomers should skim the first-hour guide first, because some of what feels like a control problem is a settings-order problem.

FAQ

Is Deskrawl Steam Deck verified? No. No Steam Deck Verified rating, no Steam Input tag and no Partial Controller Support tag in the store's 12 categories, and no mention of handhelds in any of 26 announcements.

Does Deskrawl actually run on Steam Deck? Player evidence, not an official claim. Steam flags three reviews as written primarily on a Steam Deck, all positive. The highest-rated one (40 helpful) reports it runs well using forced Proton 10.0-4 plus the Mouse Only layout.

Can I play it with only the trackpad? The store officially tags the game Mouse Only Option and Playable without Timed Input. The community route is the Mouse Only Steam Input template the 40-vote review recommends.
