Explains the Vulnerable status, how enemies gain it and which builds use it best.
Deskrawl Vulnerable Status: How Enemies Get It
Vulnerable is an enemy-only debuff in Deskrawl: Idle ARPG, and enemies get it only when struck by a short list of hero abilities, talents, one rune set and one minion. The cheapest route is the Warrior talent Heavy Blow at level 10, while the Hunter, Sorcerer and Monk each get their own applier later. Once the mark lands, every Damage vs Vulnerable bonus on your weapon, rings, necklace and runes switches on.
- Vulnerable marks the enemy, never you. Nothing in the shipped game files lets an enemy put it on your hero.
- Four talents apply it, one per class — Heavy Blow, Exposing Traps, Arcane Exposure and Exposing Strikes.
- Three hero abilities apply it directly — Valiant Strike, Deadly Hook and Flare.
- The payoff lives on three gear slots — Weapon, Ring and Necklace — plus one cheap rune.
Talent and gear names below were read from the game's own shipped data files for the 1.0 launch build of 28 September 2026, the same source behind our Deskrawl talents guide. Ability and duration details come from player reports and a community wiki, and each is labelled as such. The developer publishes no numeric values, so your in-game tooltip is the final word on every number.
What Vulnerable actually does
Vulnerable is a status effect filed among eight named combat states in the shipped data, alongside Burn, Chill, Bleeding, Frozen and Boss Tenacity. Its job is simple: while the mark sits on an enemy, every conditional bonus gated on Vulnerable treats that enemy as a valid target.
| Payoff | Where it lives | What is verified |
|---|---|---|
| Damage vs Vulnerable | Primary affix on Weapon, Ring, Necklace | Slot lists read from shipped data |
| Vulnerable-damage rune | Uncommon rune, 500 gold, fits early slots | Rune roster read from shipped data |
| Thorns reflection | Thorns takes all conditional damage bonuses | Stated in an official patch note |
| Serpent's Tongue set | Rune set whose effect applies Vulnerable | Listed by the community wiki |

One number deserves honesty rather than confidence. The community wiki describes Vulnerable as lasting 3 seconds, and players quote a damage bonus against marked targets, but neither figure appears in the shipped data or in any official announcement. Treat the 3-second figure as a community read, not a promise, and confirm the live behavior on the tooltip of the item or talent in front of you.

How enemies get it from abilities
Three hero abilities apply Vulnerable with no talent investment, which makes them the answer for any build that cannot spare a capstone slot.
| Ability | Class and slot | How it lands |
|---|---|---|
| Valiant Strike | Warrior, basic attack | Hits mark the target Vulnerable |
| Deadly Hook | Warrior, special | The special applies Vulnerable on hit |
| Flare | Hunter, special | The special applies Vulnerable on hit |
Warrior players get one more route for free. In the Steam thread that first asked this exact question, the accepted player answer is that the Warrior basic attack line has a chance to apply Vulnerable on its own, before talents enter the picture.
Player source: How do enemies get vulnerable status? — Steam discussion — the thread title is the question this page answers, and the Warrior basic-attack answer is a player report, not an official statement.
The shipped skill data backs the Warrior theme: the Warrior ability pool contains a dedicated area-effect Vulnerable skill entry. That entry carries no public numbers, so treat it as confirmation that the Warrior is the intended applier class, not as a fourth button to press.
How enemies get it from talents
Talents are the reliable route, because an ability hit can miss while a talent trigger fires on a fixed rule. Four capstone talents apply Vulnerable, one per class, and each costs a single point.
| Talent | Class | Capstone row | Trigger |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heavy Blow | Warrior | Tier 1, level 10 | Heavy Blow applies Vulnerable |
| Exposing Traps | Hunter | Tier 3, level 60 | Traps apply Vulnerable |
| Arcane Exposure | Sorcerer | Tier 3, level 60 | Every fifth Strong Attack applies Vulnerable |
| Exposing Strikes | Monk | Named by the community wiki | Strikes apply Vulnerable |
The first three rows were read directly from the shipped talent data, where each sits in its class's exclusive capstone group. The Monk row comes from the community status-effect index, which credits Vulnerable with ten sources across abilities, talents, items, minions and enemies — the most sources of any of its 92 listed effects.
Heavy Blow unlocks at level 10, fifty levels before the Hunter and Sorcerer options. Remember the capstone rule before you click: one capstone per row, and swapping one later costs 8 gold per point involved. The full row-by-row list is in our Deskrawl talents guide.
Gear and runes that cash in on the mark
Applying Vulnerable is only half the combo. The other half is stacking bonuses that do nothing until the mark lands, and all of them live in a small corner of the loot system.
Damage vs Vulnerable is a primary affix on exactly three slots: Weapon, Ring and Necklace. No other slot can roll it, and the Back slot rolls nothing at all. Because both ring slots share one affix list, a character can hold the bonus twice on rings plus once each on weapon and necklace. The slot-by-slot tables are in our Deskrawl gear stats guide.
The cheapest rune in the game feeds the same combo. One of the nine Uncommon runes scales damage against Vulnerable targets, costs 500 gold, fits the early rune slots, and can be equipped twice to stack the effect. Set runes cannot double up, but this one is not a set rune, so two copies are legal. The full rune roster is in our Deskrawl runes guide.
Thorns builds collect the bonus for free. A 0.1.12 gameplay change states that Thorn damage now takes the physical damage bonus and all conditional damage bonuses, naming Vulnerable alongside Elite and injured-target bonuses. If your Thorns reflect build already marks targets through Heavy Blow or traps, the reflection sharpens with no extra gear.

The Serpent's Tongue rune set both applies and rewards the mark. The community index lists it as a Vulnerable source, which makes it the only item-side applier in the game. Set runes drop only on the hardest difficulty with a gold beam effect, so treat this one as an endgame upgrade to the combo rather than its starting point.
Minions and enemies on the source list
The community index names Lord of the Crimson Vale twice: once as a capturable minion and once as an enemy. In the minion seat it fights for you and can apply the mark; as an enemy it shows that hostile units have their own access to the same status. If you run a minion build, this is the one name on the source list that matters, and the capture and carriage rules sit alongside other companions in our Deskrawl minions and carriage guide.
Which builds use Vulnerable best
With no published percentages anywhere, best here means which builds reach both halves of the combo with the least waste.
- Warrior pressure builds. Earliest applier in the game at level 10, three ability-side sources, and the widest talent panel to absorb the supporting points. If your plan centers on Vulnerable, this is the default pick, and the class-by-class numbers are in our Deskrawl class builds guide.
- Hunter trap builds. Exposing Traps turns every trap into an applier, but it sits at level 60 behind two earlier capstone choices. Plan the traps first and treat the mark as a late bonus, not the opener.
- Sorcerer Strong Attack builds. Arcane Exposure fires on every fifth Strong Attack, which suits a rhythm of basic attacks punctuated by heavies. Like the Hunter option it unlocks at 60, so budget the wait.
- Thorns reflection builds. The mark amplifies damage you deal without attacking, courtesy of the 0.1.12 change. Pair any cheap applier with Thorns gear on Chest, Pants, Belt and Shoulders.
Damage vs Vulnerable lines do nothing against unmarked targets. Confirm the mark first — a talent tooltip, an ability hit, or the debuff icon over the enemy — then spend gold on the weapon, rings, necklace and runes that feed on it.
FAQ
How do enemies get Vulnerable status in Deskrawl? Enemies gain Vulnerable when hit by specific sources: the abilities Valiant Strike, Deadly Hook and Flare, four applier talents (Heavy Blow, Exposing Traps, Arcane Exposure, Exposing Strikes), the Serpent's Tongue rune set, and the Lord of the Crimson Vale minion. Random hits never apply it.
What does Vulnerable do to an enemy? It marks the enemy so conditional bonuses trigger — Damage vs Vulnerable affixes, the Uncommon Vulnerable rune, and Thorns reflection under the 0.1.12 rules. The community wiki lists a 3-second duration, but the developer publishes no numbers, so confirm the live value on your own tooltip.
Which class applies Vulnerable earliest? Warrior, by a wide margin. Heavy Blow is a level-10 capstone, while the Hunter and Sorcerer appliers unlock at level 60. Warriors also hold the most ability-side sources.
Does Damage vs Vulnerable work without an applier? No. The bonus only triggers against marked targets, so an applier talent, ability, rune set or minion has to land the mark first. Buy the applier before the gear.
Can two Vulnerable runes stack? Yes for the Uncommon Vulnerable-damage rune, because ordinary runes may be equipped twice. Set runes can never double up, so the Serpent's Tongue set occupies its slots singly.
